In addition to being one of the world’s poorest countries with the weakest health systems, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot where the health of the people and the environment are inextricably linked. A partnership between PIVOT (a health care organization with unique epidemiological and health systems data) and Centre ValBio (a conservation organization with world-class research facilities in Ranomafana National Park) provide an unprecedented opportunity to make fundamental advances in human and planetary health. We call this opportunity a “Crucible for Science, Health, and the Environment.” Our research partners now include some of the world’s greatest scientific experts in model systems that span molecular scales to human populations.
