PIVOT Provides Emergency Support to Village Fire Victims
On October 1, a fire razed the village of Antaretra in Ifanadiana District. The incident affected 138 families, whose homes were destroyed along with 5 communal houses, 2 churches, and 1 school. The only places untouched by the fire were 3 houses and 1 school where around 800 people found shelter during the first days after this disaster. Most of the village’s rice harvest and personal items were also lost.
PIVOT clinical and logistics staff responded quickly, traveling to Antaretra to assess the aftermath of the fire, and bringing 200 meters of plastic sheeting for families so that they could create temporary shelters. Following our team’s arrival, a meeting with the residents was convened to discuss the community’s most pressing needs. Fortunately nobody was injured during the blaze. Our team followed up by providing essential material and supplies including water tanks, clothes, blankets, mosquito nets, soap, and cooking tools for the community.
PIVOT is working with partners including Centre ValBio and local government to strengthen the public health system in the Ifanadiana District and provide long-term support to villages such as Antaretra.
